History
Harker Heights is the third-largest town in Bell County, Texas. It is located near the town of Killeen, and also near Fort Hood, a U.S. military base which was established in 1950. As Fort Hood grew, the town of Killeen accordingly grew. Water control and improvement facilities were developed on the outskirts of Killeen to accommodate the growing population, on land owned by Pinckney R. Cox and Harley Kern. These two men began subdividing their land and selling lots. More than 600 lots had been developed, and a petition arose asking for the land to be incorporated. Harker Heights was established, and Pinckney R. Cox was elected mayor. Kern had passed away before the incorporation of the town had come to fruition, and the town was named as a tribute to him, using derivatives of his first and last names.

In December of 1988, an area known as the Comanche Hills Utility District was incorporated into Harker Heights, and the town grew by 3,500 residents.

Today, the bustling, active town of Harker Heights flourishes and awaits your arrival!
